About Us

The Backcountry Kitchen Website was inspired by a love for the outdoors, a love for food and a desire to combine both into a vertical portal for outdoor enthusiasts looking for menu planning information and assistance.


    Backcountry Kitchen was founded by
    Johanna Mickle

Johanna has spent much of her life combining the outdoors with cooking. She has worked as a hiking and mountain biking guide for ten seasons. She has been a teen expedition leader and backcountry ration planner for a semester school in Colorado, cooked for a backcountry lodge, baked for a backcountry tea house and cooked for Canadian national athletes at a glacier training camp. Johanna currently works for the Tennessee Pass Cookhouse, a backcountry restaurant in a yurt.

As a certified Natural Chef and hiking guide, Johanna wishes to share her experience and love for cooking in the outdoors with other outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate the benefits of good food in the backcountry.
